Many of the folks who knew Chief Towberman have retired. Then they started enforcing the standards more, kicking people out of the career field or out of the Air Force, but also sending people to more classes. By that I mean that in the old days you used to be able to pass DLI and then later in your career have iffy DLPT scores and not pass and it wasn't a huge deal except you didn't get the extra money and you have to do more language study. On the other side of it the standards have increased. The money is also more, and is supposed to go up. There is also a ton more support for continued classes and training and language upkeep. The teaching has improved a great deal, the access to material via the internet makes everything pretty amazing. People come out with the same or higher scores, even though the DLPT has gotten much harder.
